Chasing Dreams on the Field: WFLPSID Flag Football and Girls’ Football Teams Shine in Weekend Competitions
WFLPSID remains committed to its philosophy of “educating through sports,” integrating physical education into students’ daily after-school experiences. Through a diverse range of sports clubs, school teams, and regular specialized training programs, the school provides students with meaningful opportunities to challenge themselves, develop their skills, and gain valuable competitive experience.
With strong support from both the school and families, students dedicate their free time and weekends to training and competition, creating a vibrant culture of perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship across campus.
Last weekend, two WFLPSID teams delivered impressive performances in major competitions. The school’s newly formed flag football team made its competitive debut. Starting from scratch, the players trained diligently for more than a semester, steadily building their skills and team cohesion.
Competing in the 2026 NFL FLAG Champions Cup Shanghai Tournament, the team remained composed and focused throughout the group stage, winning all of its matches and advancing to the city’s top eight. Their achievement marked an outstanding debut and reflected the dedication and hard work invested throughout the season.
At the same time, the school’s girls’ football team returned to action in the Xuhui District Student Sunshine Sports League. Their opening match against Tianlin No. 4 Primary School was played under challenging weather conditions, with heavy rain and a slippery pitch testing the players’ resilience.
After narrowly missing two scoring opportunities in the first half, Renée (Grade 5) capitalized on a third chance, finishing a well-placed pass from Chloe W (Grade 4) to score the opening goal and give WFLPSID the lead.
Early in the second half, the opposition equalized after taking advantage of a passing error. With the score level and the pressure mounting, the WFLPSID players remained calm and focused. Through effective midfield combinations and quick transitions, they exploited space on the flanks to break through the opposition’s defense. Renée restored the lead with a well-taken free kick, while Chloe W added a third goal by calmly finishing a cross during a counterattack, securing a convincing 3–1 victory in the team’s opening group match.
On the sidelines, Head Coach Liu Daxiang and Coach Chen Yingchao closely monitored the match, making tactical adjustments and continuously encouraging the players. Coach Liu’s patient guidance and positive support helped the students remain confident through the ups and downs of competition. He often reminds his players:
“Once you step onto the field, be brave and give it your very best.”
His powerful words have become a source of confidence and determination for the team.
The success of both the flag football and girls’ football teams is a vivid reflection of WFLPSID’s commitment to sports education. From consistent training sessions to outstanding performances in competition, and from dedicated school support to strong home-school partnerships, every achievement highlights the school’s ongoing mission of nurturing students through sport.
