More Than Learning:

A Deep Dive into the PYP World of Inquiry

On September 1, 2025, the International Division of Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School held its new semester opening ceremony under the theme "Not Just Learning, But Exploring," fully launching the PYP inquiry journey. As an IB World School, the institution is about to undergo its five-year IB evaluation, continuing to deepen its practices in holistic education and international understanding.

During the ceremony, students confidently demonstrated a profound understanding of the IB curriculumfrom the six transdisciplinary themes and the ten Learner Profile attributes to the five Approaches To Learning (ATL)embodying the role of "inquirers" through their actions. The school supports each student's growth through a framework based on five core principles:

Language Policy: Language is not merely a tool but a carrier of culture and cognition. Teacher Damian introduced the language policy, while three students shared their outstanding language-based assignments. Through bilingual teaching practices in authentic contexts, the school helps students build bridges for cross-cultural communication.

Inclusion Policy: The inclusion policy reflects the schools respect and attention to each students uniqueness, valuing diverse backgrounds, abilities, and interests. It fosters an equitable, inclusive, and supportive environment where every "star" can shine. Teacher Beth vividly interpreted the picture book "All Are Welcome" to illustrate this concept. Then, four students shared their diverse and unique holiday highlights.

Behavior Policy: The behavior policy sets clear boundaries, helping students understand how to bring about change and make progress through action. By imparting values and putting them into practice, the school supports students in developing a sense of responsibility and moral judgment in daily life, allowing positive behavior to become a natural expression of their inner character. Two students shared excellent assignments that served as a vivid reflection of their self-management skills and the internalization of behavioral norms.

Academic Integrity Policy: The school emphasizes the importance of academic integrity both in class and outside class. Five teachers vividly simulated the real-life scenario of students, guiding them to practice honesty, fairness, respect for science, and integrity in their daily livesall of which lay the foundation for future academic and personal development.

Assessment Policy: The school's assessment policy is diverse, focusing not only on exam scores, but also on process-oriented evaluation. Principal Jackie and Coordinator Vanessa helped students understand the true meaning of assessmentit is about feedback, not judgment, and about growth, not just grades.

Principal Halinas speech expressed her expectations for the new semester. At the end of the ceremony, the principals presented flowers to the student representatives from each class, indicating their hopes and wishes for students’ flourishing growth. The student representatives, in turn, shared their "exploration" aspirations for the new semester, revealing their goals and lofty ideals.

In the WFLPS PYP community of inquiry, learning has already extended far beyond the classroom. Education is a journey of exploration that respects individuality, unlocks potential, and points toward the future. In the 2025 academic year, the young inquirers will continue to forge their own unique paths in this respectful yet challenging environment.
