2025-06-04

The corridor turns into a 'World Heritage Treasure Pavilion' ! Grade 2 students from WFLPS International Division unlock a new identity as 'guardians'.

In May the campus was brimming with the excitement of exploration and discovery. In the classrooms and corridors of the Year 2 section at Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School International Division, a unique exhibition titled "Our Heritage, Our Treasure" awaited visitors. These spaces were no longer just passageways. They had transformed into a small-scale "World Cultural Heritage Museum," filled with childlike charm and wisdom.

This splendid exhibition was the culmination of six weeks of deep learning, the transdisciplinary theme being "Where We Are in Place and Time".  From tentative questions to confident presentations, these young Year 2 inquirers completed a remarkable full learning cycle. They not only acquired knowledge but also demonstrated exceptional inquiry skills, independent thinking, and seamless teamwork in practice.

Spanning Six Continents, Exploring "Treasures" from 14 Countries

The children cast their gaze across the vast world! They meticulously selected 14 countries from across six continents. For each country, they chose one that was the most representative tangible cultural heritage (such as magnificent architecture or precious artifacts) and one that was the most intangible cultural heritage (such as unique festivals, exquisite craftsmanship, or beautiful music and dance).  Many interesting  examples were chosen. China's Great Wall and 24 Solar Terms, Egypt's Pyramids and Hieroglyphs, and Peru’s Machu Picchu and the scissors dance. There was also Australia's Sydney Opera House and indigenous languages. The diverse gems of world civilization became vivid and accessible through the children's perspective.

Deep Inquiry: From "What" to "How"

The students' learning went far beyond surface level. The children engaged in systematic and in-depth independent inquiry around each chosen "treasure":

Uncovering Identity: What exactly is this heritage? What makes it unique?

Understanding Value: Why is this heritage so important to the local area, the country, or even all of humanity? What historical, cultural, or spiritual significance does it hold?

Focusing on the Present: What challenges does this heritage face now? What kind of protection does it need?

Thinking about Action: As young global citizens, what can we do to protect these precious heritage?

Creative Presentation: Making Knowledge Leap Off the Board

The fruits of their inquiry demanded brilliant expression. The children transformed complex information and deep thoughts into display boards bursting with creativity and childlike wonder. They carefully drew illustrations, built models, and organized clear written descriptions. They designed interactive questions, and some groups even incorporated simple physical artifacts or multimedia elements into their presentations. Each display board was a condensed story of a nation's "treasure," embodying the effort and collaborative spirit of the group members. Walking among them, one could feel the children's curiosity and respect for world cultures, along with their sense of responsibility as "young guardians."

This was far more than just a project display. It was a dynamic lesson in global cultural awareness and civil consciousness. Through their exploration of world heritage, the children broadened their international horizons and gained a deeper understanding of the value of cultural diversity. They also honed core competencies like information gathering, analytical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creative expression. They proved with their actions: even as second graders, they can care for the world and shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding humanity's shared "treasures." The "treasures" lining these corridors are truly the brightest badges of honor in their learning journey!
